Infrastructure has become essential to architecture because architecture is fundamentally concerned with the formal and material arrangements through which ways of seeing, knowing, relating, working, and living are prefigured, made durable, or opened to being constructed otherwise - or not. What has changed historically is where this power of composition resides. The bleeding edge of its mechanistic operation has progressively migrated from relatively explicit and visible forms—ritual, law, ideology, institution, architectural type—whose claims could be named and contested, into increasingly impersonal material and technical orders: property, commodities, standards, grids, logistics, pipes, machines, code, data, and automated systems of control. This is the migration I have described as composition vacating older, slower, and more contestable media and moving elsewhere.
This migration also transforms the basis of authority. As John P. Clark argues, domination becomes more difficult to contest when ideology is embedded in the “objective order of things”; what once appeared as a claim increasingly appears as necessity, neutrality, or simply reality. Darin Barney similarly describes infrastructure as non-discursive politics: laws and edicts can be argued against, while a wall, pipeline, property boundary, road, standard, or logistical system has already materialised a decision and organised conduct before anything is said.
The authority of this infrastructural order rests on at least two intertwined forms of legitimacy. One is material: its capacity to provide security, abundance, circulation, comfort, and the reliable reproduction of everyday life. The other is existential: its capacity to stabilise identities, hierarchies, categories, and relations of mastery, positioning almost everyone, both abstractly and concretely, within relations in which they are authorised to dominate something placed beneath them—labour, land, animals, bodies, or other subordinated classes of being. As older forms of domination lost legitimacy, their authority became contestable; infrastructure increasingly absorbed and naturalised many of those relations within apparently technical systems.
That settlement is now becoming unstable. Dominant infrastructures and property regimes—the material scaffolding of a metaphysics of standing reserve—deplete the very conditions of their own possibility, extracting from life and so-called “resources” beyond their capacities to reproduce and replenish themselves. As they increasingly fail to fulfil their promises of progress, security, abundance, and ecological stability, they become visible not as neutral technical necessity or universal reason, but as historically particular architectures of relation and ways of worlding. Infrastructure matters to architecture, then, because it has become a privileged medium of architectural power—and because its emerging crisis is making that power visible, contestable, and available to be constructed radically otherwise.

- Karl Marx — Capital, Vol. I, especially commodity fetishism and “Machinery and Large-Scale Industry”; plus the “Fragment on Machines” in the Grundrisse. Foundational for the proposition that historically produced social relations can confront people as objective properties of things, and that machinery is not merely equipment but participates in the organization of labour, authority, abstraction, and accumulation.
- Max Horkheimer & Theodor Adorno — Dialectic of Enlightenment (1947); Horkheimer, Eclipse of Reason (1947). These texts provide a foundational account of the relationship between instrumental reason, domination of nature, abstraction, calculability, and domination of human beings. They explicitly connect the reduction of nature to manipulable material with the repression and administration of “inner nature.”
- Herbert Marcuse — One-Dimensional Man (1964), especially Chapters 1 and 6. Marcuse is particularly important for understanding how material abundance and technological efficiency become sources of legitimacy, and how political domination can cease to appear as domination when embodied in apparently rational technical organization. His formulation of dependence upon the “objective order of things” is especially relevant to the argument developed here.
- Martin Heidegger — “The Question Concerning Technology” (1954). Heidegger provides the metaphysical dimension of this argument: Gestell, or enframing, renders beings available as standing-reserve—positioned, stored, and made available for indefinite recombination and use. While less concerned with capitalism or political power directly, this account is important for understanding infrastructure and property as material scaffolds of a particular way of revealing and worlding.
- Raniero Panzieri — “The Capitalist Use of Machinery: Marx Versus the ‘Objectivists’” (1961). Panzieri is essential to the historical argument developed here because he rejects the idea that technological development follows an autonomous or neutral rationality. Capitalist relations of production shape technological development itself, so apparently technical rationality embodies historically specific relations of command and responses to labour struggle.
- Michel Foucault — Discipline and Punish (1975), especially “Panopticism”; then Security, Territory, Population (1977–78). Foucault is crucial for understanding the historical movement from authority exercised through sovereign declaration toward power exercised through arrangements of bodies, spaces, visibility, circulation, and apparatuses. The Panopticon is significant precisely because power becomes automated and disindividualized through material arrangement.
- Henri Lefebvre — The Production of Space (1974). Lefebvre offers one of the most important bridges into architecture. Space is neither a neutral container nor merely representation, but something socially produced which in turn reproduces social relations. His concept of abstract space is particularly important for understanding grids, property, infrastructure, everyday life, urbanization, the state, and capital as mutually constitutive.
- Lewis Mumford — “Authoritarian and Democratic Technics” (1964), then The Myth of the Machine (1967). Mumford asks whether different technical systems themselves tend toward different forms of political organization, distinguishing centralized, system-oriented, authoritarian technics from more dispersed and participatory ones.
- Langdon Winner — “Do Artifacts Have Politics?” (1980), and The Whale and the Reactor (1986). Winner is indispensable for the proposition that material and technical systems can materialise political decisions. His central question is whether machines, structures, and technical systems can embody particular forms of power and authority rather than functioning as neutral means subsequently put to political use.
- Moishe Postone — Time, Labor, and Social Domination (1993). Postone is important for sharpening the concept of impersonal domination. Capitalism is understood not simply as one class consciously ruling another, but as a historically specific system in which abstract social forms acquire a quasi-objective character and exercise domination through time, labour, value, and production.
- James C. Scott — Seeing Like a State (1998). Scott is especially useful for questions of type, typology, classification, and situated knowledge. Cadastral systems, standardized measurement, scientific forestry, planned cities, and related techniques make heterogeneous realities administratively legible by imposing simplified schemas upon them.
- Timothy Mitchell — Carbon Democracy (2011). Mitchell demonstrates that political possibilities are materially shaped by the architectures of energy themselves. Coal and oil generate different networks, chokepoints, labour relations, and therefore different capacities for political disruption, organization, and control.
- Brian Larkin — “The Politics and Poetics of Infrastructure” (2013). Larkin offers one of the clearest accounts of why infrastructure must be understood beyond function. Infrastructure materializes political rationalities, but also fantasy, desire, aesthetics, and promises of modernity; its form constitutes subjects and worlds as much as its technical operation circulates matter.
- Keller Easterling — Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space (2014), preceded by Organization Space. Easterling is particularly important for understanding how repeatable spatial formulas, standards, zones, and protocols operate as a kind of spatial operating system, generating de facto forms of polity that may act faster than, alongside, or outside explicit law.
- Darin Barney — “Infrastructure and the Form of Politics” (2021). Barney is directly relevant to the distinction between discursive authority and materialized order. He frames infrastructure as non-discursive politics, while connecting infrastructural form to extractive capitalism, settler colonialism, and racial capitalism.
- Søren Mau — Mute Compulsion: A Marxist Theory of the Economic Power of Capital (2023). Mau isolates a form of capitalist power that is neither ideology nor direct violence: impersonal material compulsions such as market dependency and wage dependence that structure conduct without requiring anyone to issue an explicit command.
- Matteo Pasquinelli — The Eye of the Master (2023). Pasquinelli is particularly important for understanding the historical migration of composition into computation. He reconstructs automation and artificial intelligence from the division, measurement, and control of labour, arguing that algorithms crystallize forms of social organization and collective knowledge rather than emerging from an autonomous technological intelligence.
