faith in science

he felt intensely the degeneration of the human spirit that had taken place in only 100 years.

his sense of alienation flowed primarily from the belief that western civilisation had accepted a general faith in science as a solution to the problems of life.

people nowadays think that scientists exist to instruct them, while poets and musicians exist to give them pleasure.

the idea that the latter have something to teach them, that does not occur to them.
